Leona Valley Sertoma Serves Up A FREE ~ Traditional Holiday Dinner

Leona Valley Sertoma Serves Up A FREE ~ Traditional Holiday Dinner

Leona Valley Sertoma hosted about 75 senior guests, 55 and over, (plus delivered more than 20 dinners) for the nonprofit service organization’s FREE Senior Dinner on Sunday, December 4, 2022. As always, our annual event provisions covered Green Valley, Lake Hughes, Elizabeth Lake, Three Points and, of course, Leona Valley. Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, we had to cancel a couple of senior dinners. Needless to say, this year, the house was “rocking” and the fellowship was fabulous.

Our menu included turkey, ham, meatloaf (Juanita Kirkpatrick’s famous recipe), green beans, mashed potatoes & gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, assorted desserts, coffee and punch.

Believe it or not, it took approximately 54 people that consisted of Sertoma members, community residents, 4-H Racketeers and the Leona Valley Queens who helped create a most successful holiday dinner. In other words, it didn’t take a village to get the job done, IT ACTUALLY TOOK A GRAND PORTION OF OUR COMMUNITY to get the job done!

In the past, Leona Valley Sertoma usually paid for the entire meal out of our members pockets ~ however, NOT THIS TIME. This year, from newly acquired grants and sponsorships from Cal Water, Smart & Final and Ashley Furniture, the entire expense of our meal was paid for.

Always remember that Sertoma’s main purpose is to focus on the hearing impaired, and we are committed to just that, and more. For the last eight years our group has provided a thousand dollar scholarship to one Antelope Valley College student who is majoring in deaf studies to pursue a career in helping the hearing impaired.

Three members, including two founding member, of Leona Valley Sertoma, pose for a photo at the Leona Valley Sertoma Holiday Dinner.
(L to R), Bev Brownfield, Shirley Kraft, Juanita Kirkpatrick.

This year it seemed most appropriate to honor two very important members who were the originators of Leona Valley Sertoma which, according to Bev Brownfield, was chartered in 1997. Both Juanita Kirkpatrick and Bev Brownfield engaged in a recent AV Press interview that provided so much of our original club’s foundation. Juanita stated that our club originally consisted of only men (the originator being Bob Mallicoat who acquired 25 men) and the women were later included.

Leona Valley Sertoma invites you to please visit our web site at: LeonaValleySertoma.org to better understand and visually enjoy the many events that we have provided to our community and public.

We encourage folks to join us on either a first or third Saturday of any month for an 8am complimentary breakfast at Jack’s Place ~ 40352 90 St. W., Leona Valley. WE WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU!

ALL of our members are most grateful for EVERYONE’S continued support and generosity. WE wish you a wonderful Holiday Season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Leona Valley Sertoma Hosts December Events

Leona Valley Sertoma Hosts December Events

Nobody needs to remind you that 2021 began pretty much the way 2020 ended, which is to say “not so great”, to put it mildly. However, Leona Valley Sertoma is determined not to let 2021 go out without some sense of normalcy as they host their annual 2021 Holiday Dinner, formerly called the Senior Christmas Dinner, and their 2021 Outdoor Holiday Food & Toy Drive. This is an opportunity for our Seniors to once again get together to swap stories, laugh, and enjoy good food. The Food and Toy Drive is an opportunity to once again help our neighbors who very well might not have the means to serve up a Christmas dinner or put toys under the tree this Christmas. We have all suffered in various ways due to the pandemic, but some more than others. If you have the means, we ask you to open your hearts to helping those less fortunate and we offer these events and our way to help. – thank you

Cow Chip BBQ 2003 in Leona Valley

One thing every Leona Valley Sertoma event has in common is good times and the Cow Chip BBQ 2003 was no different. There was good food, games and music, along with plenty of laughter and smiles. A lot of work and planning went into putting on this event and it showed. Because it was a big success this became an annual event for many years to follow. The inaugural event was held at the Pitchfork Ranch, located west of the community of Leona Valley. The owner of the Pitchfork Ranch was Bob Mallicoat, a founding member of Leona Valley Sertoma, and a past president of Sertoma International.

Putting on a successful fundraising event doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because a lot of work and planning go in to it. The initial idea was the bar-be-que, presented to members by the fundraising committee. Members loved the idea and immediately began the process of planning. It was accomplished through the talents of the many members of the Leona Valley Sertoma and, just as important, the hard work and generosity of the many volunteers.

Wondering how the cow chip part of this event came to be? Country living tends to include an abundance of cow chips.

The Cow Chip BBQ Video

The video opens telling you exactly what to expect. Food, games, and music. There was a trap shoot station and a cow paddy toss. There was music on the cabaret stage. The food was a mouth-watering BBQ.

I hope you enjoy the video, in addition to the food, games, and music, there were llamas and, of course, you can’t have bull drop bingo without a bull! Don’t know what bull drop bingo is? Ask a member of Leona Valley Sertoma. If you need some help finding one, take a look at the current Officers & Directors page.

Author’s Note: As the video cameraman and a Sertoma member, I was working the event, so I did not get to shoot as much footage as I would have liked. Too bad as I’m sure it was all a blast.

Tis the Season – 2018

Tis the Season! That’s right, it’s that time of year again! Time to get together in celebration of the season and in recognition of people who deserve to be recognized. For Leona Valley Sertoma members, December has two long standing traditions, the Senior Christmas Dinner, held on December 2, 2018, and their annual Christmas party for the members. The Christmas party is an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with their fellow Sertomans and to hand out the Awards and was held on December 1, 2018 at the home of member Shirley Kraft.

2018 Senior Christmas Dinner

Leona Valley Sertoma once again hosted its annual Senior Christmas Dinner on Sunday, December 2, 2018 with plenty of good cheer and delicious food to go around. This event is not a fundraiser, but rather a thank you to our senior citizens. After all, Leona Valley would not be what is is without them.

Tis the Season to recognize the 2018 Sertoman of the Year, Mary Thomas.

On December 1st, Mary Thomas (right) received the “Sertoman of the Year” award representing her many years of loyal service to our organization. Mary has made quite an impressive contribution to the longevity and success of our small but mighty group – ALWAYS keeping us together with a smile and a loving hug.

2018 Service To Mankind Award

Tis the Season to recognize good works. 2018 Service To Mankind Award Recipients, Steve and Tamara Reaves.

On December 1st Steve and Tamara Reaves were surprised with the Sertoma “Service to Mankind” award for their excellence in community service.  Their entire family has not only provided a special comfort zone for Leona Valley, but have worked very hard organizing events that would appeal to the entire family.

Thank You Patrons of St. Pat’s Dinner

Leona Valley Sertoma Says-

“THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT”

THANK YOU to the MANY folks who supported our epic 2018 St. Patrick’s Day dinner …

The rain, sleet, and snow did not keep the folks from our Lakes and Valley’s and our neighbors from Palmdale, Lancaster and Rosamond from coming out to enjoy this annual event, as we served over 200 dinners. This year, the net proceeds of the fundraiser will be presented to the Leona Valley Improvement Association to help defray the repair costs for a new driveway and/or additional building expenses.

This year we prepared 260 pounds of prime corned beef, 55 heads of round green cabbage, 100 pounds of red potatoes, 2 ½ cases of carrots and 80 pounds of onions all to be enjoyed by our guests. AND, it took the muscle power of over 30 volunteers to make it all happen.

We also owe a big THANK YOU to Rally Auto Group for their sponsorship, one anonymous contributor, Chefs – Bill Moore & John Seymour, Casa Gutierrez, LVIA, Gymkhana, 4-H Racketeers, LV Queen Contestants, Cherry Chapters, Lakes & Valley’s Gazette, AV Press, Live Again, Mayde in Ireland, Merrie Profitt, Karl Pearcy, John Glover, Linda & Darik Bolin, KJ & Sandy Miller, Juanita & Vance Kirkpatrick, Pam & Bill Elliott, Charlene Moore, Bev Brownfield, Betty Wade, Linda Lorenz, Deserie Taback, Mary Thomas, Ray Mullins, Jan Clark, Kathy Bramwell, Bud & Sharon Lehrner, Teresa, Matt & Alex Braley, Bridget Razo, Susan Heinold & Cathy Lord.
