2017 St. Patrick’s Day Dinner – Review

A Big Thank You To All

This Year’s Leona Valley Sertoma St. Patrick’s Day Dinner could not have been a success without our volunteers and all those who came and dined with us.

A few days have passed now (3/23/17) since Leona Valley Sertoma hosted one of the greatest St. Patrick’s Dinner events EVER!!! We were blessed with perfect weather, which included NO WIND in our precious valley. We weren’t certain about the turnout because local families were on Spring break and due to respecting Lent, we thought many guests wouldn’t be eating meat, giving up dessert or not having cocktails. WELL, OUR THOUGHTS DIDN’T RING TRUE!

WE FED CLOSE TO 200 VERY HUNGRY PEOPLE!!! Actually, our preparation began six days ahead of time with the inclusion of staffing about 25 hard working volunteers, and in the end, we served 258 pounds of corned beef, 100 lbs. of red potatoes, 80 lbs. of carrots, 80 lbs. of onions and 55 heads of green cabbage – not to mention complimentary desserts of all kind, coffee and lemonade.

Our chefs, Bud Lehner and Bill Moore were guided by head supervisor, John Seymour. For two days their cooking expertise begun with firing up the stoves at 5am allowing the games to begin. Bob Reader and Ron Remy specialized in trimming and slicing ALL of the meat to perfection. Charlene Moore specialized in glazing some of the meat — Our staff included many of our members and local people, Home Depot servers, Live Again Christian Facility (using their muscle) and naturally many of our members focusing on specific details to make things run smoothly… Our treasurer, Juanita Kirkpatrick, along with friend Merrie Profitt, took care of the entrance tickets, Bev Brownfield, along with Tom Joynt served as the bartenders, Linda Joynt coordinated all decorations and member, Ray Mullins, took some pretty nice photos. I have to say that I, Jan Clark, had the honor of this year’s organization from beginning to end – Very proud day for us all and we look forward to what lies ahead for 2018. We Sertoman’s are most grateful for everyone’s energy and dedication and we sincerely thank this year’s sponsors for their generous donations that contributed to a most profitable and joyous event.

Gratefully yours,

Jan Clark – Chairman of the Board

2017 St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

The 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

It was another beautiful day in the Leona Valley and, being March 17th, to be wearing Green. It was also a good idea to be at the Leona Valley Community Building for the annual Leona Valley Sertoma St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. This annual fundraiser has become a favorite of the community and brings out many community members to enjoy an afternoon of food and good times with neighbors and friends. Jan Clark stated it was the best Leona Valley Sertoma St. Patrick’s Day Dinner EVER with almost two hundred very hungry folks served. They enjoyed a traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage along with great selection of desserts and a bar featuring Irish Coffee; plus, what can only be described as truly perfect weather.

These photographs give you just a hint of the preparation, the anticipation, and the good times enjoyed by all in attendance.

Happy St. Paddy's Day!

Leona Valley Sertoma has been serving the Leona Valley and surrounding Lakes and Valleys communities since its beginnings back in December of 1997. For those not familiar with Sertoma, the word is taken from the phrase “Service To Mankind” and that is exactly what the members of the Leona Valley Sertoma strive to do. Make no doubt about it, this part of Los Angeles County truly deserves to be called paradise and the people who live here know how fortunate they are to live in such a beautiful place. Perhaps that is why the people around here are so friendly and seemingly always smiling.Of course, just like anywhere else there are people in need, or some person, place or thing, that could use a little help in one way or another, and helping is what Sertoma is all about. Leona Valley Sertoma has a proud history of involvement in the community, whether it is helping someone enduring a hardship, or stepping up to help make a community improvement project a reality. (To find more to read about, click the “Home” button in the navigation menu at the top of the page.)

If you are interested in learning more about Sertoma, why not attend a breakfast meeting to see it for yourself. You’ll find the members are a warm, welcoming group ready to share their enthusiasm for being a part of making their communities a better place to live, to raise families, and to make friends. Leona Valley Sertoma meets at 8:00am, on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month at Jack’s Place, on 90th Street West, in Leona Valley, California.

Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship Program 2017

The Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship Program

It’s that time of year again! The Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship committee is looking for applications from graduating seniors for the 2017 Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship program. If you live in any of the Lakes and Valleys communities and are a graduating senior, or you know someone that is, the time to act is now.

Don’t Delay! Applications must be turned in by March 31, 2017 to be considered for this year’s scholarship program. To learn more about the scholarship program and to download a copy of the application visit the Leona Valley Sertoma web site at: Leona Valley Sertoma.

Qualifications information and Scholarship Applications are available for download on our Scholarship Program page, which is located under the “About Us” link in the menu at the top of the web page. Or use this link: Scholarship Program to go directly to the Scholarship Program page.

Throughout the year Leona Valley Sertoma holds a variety of events and fundraisers and providing scholarships is one of the programs near and dear to their hearts. The number, and the amounts, of the scholarships are dictated by the amount of monies raised and the worthiness of the applicants. By helping students to continue their educations and build careers these Sertomans recognize they are insuring that the future can be a positive and exciting one.

Their hard work in putting on these events is supported by the community through their attendance and participation, which means the whole community can take pride in knowing it is supporting the hopes and dreams of these graduating seniors as they begin their journey in to adulthood. The educations they receive will enable them to become responsible adults with the ability to handle the challenges they will face in their careers, as parents, and as citizens.

The Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship Program plays a key role in helping it’s members in achieving their stated mission of improving the quality of life in their local communities and to accelerate progress in health, education, freedom, and democracy. Through this program and their other programs they are helping people to help themselves and encouraging personal development.
