A Visit from the Sertoma Mountain West Director

David Oppenheim, Sertoma Mountain West Director
David Oppenheim, Sertoma Mountain West Director

Last month, at our Saturday morning meeting, our local Leona Valley Sertoma club had the pleasure of a visit from the Mountain West Director, Captain David Oppenheim. Capt. Oppenheim has been involved in Sertoma since 1987 as a Life Member, has been awarded Sertoman of the Year six times on a Club Level and two times on a District Level and is currently the Sertoma Mountain West Regional Director.

Along with his involvement in Sertoma, David belongs to the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, Arapahoe County Bar Association, Southeast Metro Law Club, Big Brothers of America, Naval Reserve Association, Rocky Mountain Navy Association, Naval Institute, Navy League, Reserve Officers Association, Jewish War Veterans, Navy Divers Association and National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Western Welcome Week. He is currently the board president of the Littleton Fire Protection District. Since retiring from the U.S. Naval Reserve, he has remained active in the Naval Reserve Association and the Blue & Gold Program with the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Sea Power Program.

Last month David reached out to our club and asked to join us as he was on a Sertoma road tour. Of course, we immediately agreed and feel very honored that he chose our club to visit.  David traveled approximately 4000 miles over 10 days to visit clubs in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and California. A total of seven clubs and hundreds of wonderful Sertomans! Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to visit all of the clubs he wanted to, but will continue his travels later this year, and next year to make sure that he visits all the clubs in the mountain west region. The best region in SERTOMA! (David’s words 😊)

Sertomans take a group photo with David Oppenheim, Sertoma Mountain West DirectorAfter the meeting, we had the pleasure of showing David around Leona Valley, including the Lakes & Valley’s Arts Guild, Lake Hughes, and Elizabeth Lake; and we popped by The Rock Inn and The Painted Turtle. He was very impressed with our small but mighty communities and hopes to return one day for another visit.

Vets4Veterans and Memorial Day

our american flag containing images of soldiers and the statue of liberty. It’s Memorial Day Weekend, a time to remember our military men and women who gave their all in the service of their country. We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, but that freedom comes at a cost and it is the brave men and women, in all our military branches, who make our freedoms possible. Let’s not lose sight of the meaning behind this national holiday as we spend time with our families, as it is not just an opportunity to go to the beach, or enjoy a backyard BBQ, or get away for a long weekend. Take a moment to look around when your out and about this weekend, odds are there are veterans, young and old, amongst the people around you. If you can, take a moment and thank them for their service. Now stop and realize there are many who are not there, these would be the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Vets4Veterans

I’m writing this because I got an email from Jan Clark sharing a flyer for the AVVets4Veterans (Training Program). This program helps veterans gain skills that they can use as they come back in to the community after serving their country. The flyer encourages you to Hire a Veteran if you have a need of a variety of skills they can offer. Listed are brush-clearing, carpentry, power-washing, roofing, flooring, drywall, demo, and landscaping. I’m willing to bet there are other skills many of these vets can offer, too.

The following is the email I received from Jan, which I’m including because I think she got it right with her words. (Click this link to down load the flyer: Vets4Veterans flyer)

Good morning to all,

As we are approaching Memorial Day, I wanted to wish each of you a peaceful and loving day. It also seemed appropriate to forward the Vets4Veterans flyer hoping that you would share it.  Remember, that if you are in need of the services they provide, possibly you would give them a call as they would be most grateful.

If you, a family member or friend have served in the military, please know that I am most grateful for your service.  (Click this link if you would like to download the flyer: https://leonavalleysertoma.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/vets4veterans-yard-work-flyer-2023-Libre-office-file.pdf)

To my favorite people, I wish each of you God’s blessings.

Granny Jan 😘

An Achievement in Academic Excellence

Leona Valley Sertoma Recognizes Achievement in Academic Excellence

Once again, Leona Valley Sertoma has invested and recognized one graduating, Antelope Valley College student who has majored in “deaf studies”.  April Rock and I had the honor of screening this years’ recipient, Stosha Coley, who’s objective is to fully certify as an ASL interpreter for the Los Angeles superior court system.  While raising two children on her own, Stosha managed to obtain a 3.24 academic score, as well as being considered an excellent student with superior ethics and skills.  After meeting Stosha at the “Meet and Greet” breakfast, hosted by the Antelope Valley College Scholarship Foundation, April and I knew immediately that Stosha truly represents the achievement in academic excellence we look for in our applicants.

Leona Valley Sertoma Invests in Academic Excellence with this years scholarship recipient Stosha Coley.
Sertoma Scholarship Recipient

Our Sertoma members value our recipients choices, lives, dreams and specific goals pertaining to our “deaf studies” criteria and our mission is to make a major impact in their future.  Our hope is for the student to always consider our “Service to Mankind” motto as a beacon for public service to help better the lives of others.

I feel that it is quite important to share the mission of Antelope Valley College, as I truly believe that they and Sertoma have the same pride in our graduating college students.  That being said, we both accomplish an end result by providing a quality and comprehensive education for a variety of students who want to continue learning. We both agree to commit to a students success, offering value and opportunity for ALL members of our community.  Sertoma’s offer is the same quality that we strive to achieve regarding our local high school graduates.

Since the Antelope Valley College’s founding in 1929, the needs of students have been more than a priority and have been provided both academic and athletic programs.   Their provisions have been associate degree programs, certificate programs and transfer programs that prepare students to continue their education at four-year colleges and universities.

The Antelope Valley College Foundation is a non-profit, tax exempt 501 (c)(3) corporation committed to increase resources and funds.  The Foundation was established in 1993 and is designated to receive gifts for the college from individuals, corporations and foundations.  Leona Valley Sertoma became involved with the Scholarship Foundation in 2013 and has had the honor of fulfilling many goals and dreams by awarding $1,000 annually to one chosen student who is majoring in deaf studies.

It is best said, that “lives are enriched and futures continue to be built for generations”.
