2019 Scholarship Program & St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Are You Ready for what 2019 will bring?

The members of Leona Valley Sertoma look forward to what the new year will bring and to continuing some of their long-standing programs and events. These include the 2019 Scholarship Program and the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner, both have been around for quite some time.

Scholarship Applications for 2019 are here!

Can you believe it? The Leona Valley Sertoma Scholarship Program is twenty years old this year and still going strong. Leona Valley Sertoma established the Leona Valley SERTOMA Scholarship Program to identify and reward local students who have shown personal and intellectual qualities through academic achievement, as well as participation and leadership in extracurricular and community activities. Leona Valley Sertoma has given out close to $50,000.00, in scholarships since 1999. The goal of the program is to serve the needs of local graduating seniors and those community college students transferring to continue their education.

Scholarship consideration is also open to students attending Community college who live in Leona Valley, Green Valley, Lake Hughes, Three Points or Lake Elizabeth, who are transferring to a 4-year college.

Our most recent scholarship recipient was Margaret (Maggie) Mihaljevich. Click on her name to read the post and we welcome you to share our post on your Facebook page.

You can learn more about the Scholarship Program on our Scholarship Information page, where you can download the scholarship application form and the information sheet. You will find the scholarhip program page link under the “About” link (“Scholarship Program”) in the menu at the top of the page, or click here to open Scholarship Program page. (page will open in a new tab.)

2018 – Gala Under the Stars

The 2018 – Gala Under the Stars

On June 9th, our Leona Valley Sertoma organization hosted the 2018 – Gala Under the Stars, which proved to be a very special and successful wine, beer, bourbon and food tasting event. It was a “sell out”! We are proud to say that with all of the many events that we have hosted in our community, this was a first time raising funds for Canine Companions for Independence” and I believe that, by now, you 2018 - Gala Under the Stars - Bravery Brewing rep. Kristine Bobrosky understand that our main mission and goals are to contribute to nonprofit organizations pertaining to the hearing impaired.

The realization came to us that we have never provided help to a person with a hearing disability who was in need of a special assistance dog. Due to many requests to host another Gala Under the Stars, Leona Valley Sertoma knew we needed to begin the process and secure the plan very soon – HOWEVER, who would be receiving the funds raised! We were directed to contact “Canine Companions for Independence” (CCI), in the Oceanside area, and to speak to Melissa Billingsley in Tehachapi, who operated a CCI satellite office for assistance dogs… she not only spoke at one of our meetings but 2018 - Gala Under the Stars - Clifford Meridth owner of Stray Leaf Vineyard and Melissa Billingsley rep. for Canine Companions for Independencebrought three very well trained dogs to demonstrate the many commands that were required to be the eyes, ears and hands of their human partners. At our meeting, it was a unanimous decision that the 2018 – Gala Under the Stars would definitely take place and ALL PROCEEDS would go to sponsor one goodwill ambassador service dog.

There are four types of assistance dogs: Service Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Facility Dogs and Skilled Companion Dogs —– why not visit the Canine Companions for Independence website to better understand the actual meaning of these four categories and also learn so much more about “Canine Companions for Independence”. I guarantee that you will be amazed and will learn that they are “miracle dogs”.

With the generosity and faith of our sponsors, vendors, entertainers (and especially our guests) Sertoma was proudly able to recently provide a $10,000 check to CCI which gives us the honor of naming a puppy on behalf of Leona Valley Sertoma, but also help provide the essentials to raise the puppy during its training session. 2018 - Gala Under the Stars - Gala vendor Heart 'N Soul Coffee House

As ALWAYS, we in Leona Valley Sertoma are forever grateful for the support you have given to each and every event we have hosted, but your generosity toward CCI was “over the top”.

Sertoma in general, has always stood for “Service to Mankind” and we truly believe that we have done a great job proudly representing the needs and requests of Leona Valley and beyond, as there is nothing stronger than the heart and spirit of a volunteer.

Thank you, again, from ALL of our Sertoma members and you are invited to check: LeonaValleySertoma.org for more information.

Leona Valley
Annual Community Garage Sale

Pictured above are Shirley Kraft (left), Recording Secretary & 1st year Sertoma Director and with her are her grandchildren (l. to r.) Owen Spencer, age 5, Madeleine Spencer, age 8, and Jackson Spencer, age 11. On the far right is Jan Clark.

The Leona Valley Annual Community Garage Sale

Leona Valley is a small community, with a big heart, that lies tucked away in the northwest corner of Los Angeles County. Each year the Leona Valley Improvement Association hosts a community-wide garage sale where residents have the opportunity to set up shop, so to speak, to sell those unwanted items, that are just taking up space, and earn a little extra cash for whatever the family might need. This year’s garage sale event took place on September 24, 2016.

In the photo above, Jackson is presenting Jan Clark, Sertoma CEO, a $5.00 donation, while stopping by Leona Valley Sertoma garage sale location that is participating in the Leona Valley Annual Community Garage Sale. Leona Valley Sertoma has been serving the community since December 1997 and is chartered through Sertoma International, a non-profit service organization. The name Sertoma comes from the phrase, “SERvice TO MAnkind” and Leona Valley Sertoma is fully commited to doing just that, they serve the Lakes and Valley communities and to make a difference through sponsorship of a variety of programs. For the most part the funds go to our special SPONSORSHIP needs, such as, the senior Christmas dinner, holiday baskets, scholarships, school projects and so many more.

Through their efforts they have always worked to improve the quality of life for those in their communities, wherever and whenever possible. Their efforts truly are making a difference and, if Spencer is any indication, that desire to help others is being passed on to those who will be the leaders of tomorrow. With the help of the Spencer children and so many other generous people, they are all helping to make a difference and are a part of the story that can only be called a “well rounded” success.

WE ARE GRATEFUL
